GnuCash for MAC

Free, open-source accounting software for Mac: double-entry books, reports, invoices, stock portfolios and bank statement reconciliation.

GnuCash Overview

GnuCash is personal and small-business accounting software built on double-entry bookkeeping: every transaction debits one account and credits others by an equal amount, so the books always balance. You enter transactions in a familiar checkbook-style register, reconcile accounts against bank statements and see where your money goes with reports and graphs.

For a small business, GnuCash adds customer and vendor tracking, jobs, invoicing, bill payment, and tax and billing terms. It also handles multiple currencies and stock and mutual fund portfolios with online quotes, and imports QIF and OFX files from other financial software. It is made by the GnuCash development team and is free and open source under the GNU GPL (version 2 or 3). Version 5.17 is a bug-fix release in the stable 5.x series. There are separate Mac downloads: Apple Silicon needs macOS 11 or later and Intel needs macOS 10.13 or later. Files are stored as XML by default; storing them in a SQL database is marked experimental by the developers, who report that some corner cases have caused data loss.

Key Features

GnuCash brings proper bookkeeping to personal and small-business money.

  • Double entry: every transaction keeps the books in balance.
  • Checkbook-style register: split transactions, autofill and cleared or reconciled marks.
  • Scheduled transactions: recurring entries with reminders when they are due.
  • Reports and graphs: balance sheet, profit and loss, portfolio valuation and charts.
  • Reconciliation: compare an account with your bank statement.
  • Small business: customers, vendors, invoices, bills, and tax and billing terms.
  • Investments: stock and mutual fund portfolios with online quotes.
  • Import: QIF and OFX files, with matching that recognizes duplicate transactions.

What’s New in Version 5.17

GnuCash 5.17 fixes bugs in the stable 5.x series.

  • Printing several checks now reaches the print queue after the first one
  • Fixes a reconciliation error with transactions posted after the reconcile date
  • CSV import no longer skips fields when a backslash comes just before a final quote
  • CSV register export always puts debits before credits
  • Unvoid is available again for transactions voided without a reason
  • The earlier chart tooltip returns as a configurable choice, and tooltips are easier to read

GnuCash FAQ

Is GnuCash free?

Yes. GnuCash is free and open source, licensed under the GNU GPL, version 2 or 3.

Which macOS version does GnuCash need?

The Apple Silicon download needs macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. The Intel download needs macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later.

Does GnuCash run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. There is a separate download for Apple Silicon Macs and another for Intel Macs. Choose the one that matches your Mac.

Is GnuCash for personal use or for a business?

Both. It handles personal accounts, and it adds customer and vendor tracking, invoicing, bill payment, and tax and billing terms for small businesses.

What is double-entry accounting?

Every transaction debits one account and credits others by an equal amount. This keeps the books balanced, so the difference between income and expenses equals the sum of assets and liabilities.

Can GnuCash import data from other finance programs?

Yes. It imports Quicken QIF files with an assistant, and OFX files, and a matching system recognizes duplicate transactions during import.

Can GnuCash track stocks and foreign currencies?

Yes. Accounts can use different currencies, and you can track stocks and mutual funds individually or as a portfolio, with online quotes from various web sites.

Where does GnuCash store my data?

By default in an XML file. It can also use SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL, but the developers call that support experimental and report that some corner cases have caused data loss.

Can I install GnuCash with Homebrew?

Yes. Run brew install --cask gnucash.
